Keep your outdoor hose spigot from freezing with a freeze proof hose bib

Don’t Make This Common Homeowner Mistake!

I know it’s not something that people want to talk about right now, but winter is coming! With a few more weeks until the temperature really drops, knowing what to do when it does can decrease your home’s chances from serious damage. With these tips on winterizing your outdoor faucets it can save you time and money.

It is a key point to remove your hoses and to turn off your outside water supply lines, they don’t do you any good just sitting around in the cold, and could lead to problems later on!

By disconnecting your garden hose, and turning off the water to your bibb, you are avoiding other potential problems, one night of freezing weather could set your entire system off, and could cause a break in your pipes.

Here’s how to properly winterize your hose bibb:

1. Regardless of whether you have a frost proof hose bibb or not, it’s important to remove your garden hoses from the outdoor hose spigot first.

After you remove the hose, untie any kinks or knots, and then drain all of the water out completely.

2. When the water is drained and you’ve straightened out your hose completely, wind it into a circle, and store it inside, the warmer the room the better. Garages can retain the cold, so better to leave elsewhere. Next, inspect your hose for leaks. We know, we know, this could take a while, but it is vital to your system to make sure there are absolutely NO leaks or drips whatsoever. Even if the water is dripping very slowly, that is still a leak, and needs to be dealt with ASAP.

3. Once you’ve removed the hose completely, inspect the surrounding area for any leaks or dripping, any extra water can harm this process. Now, turn off your supply line, THEN make sure you turn on your outdoor faucet to drain the existing water. If you have a frost-proof bibb, then great, if not, you must drain out your line.

4. In exercising extra caution, install a frost-proof hose bibb. Now you’re ready for the cold weather!
